Amtrak purchased a total of 111 of the 236 domes built. At inception,
they purchased 95 domes - 80 of them from BN, which was the entire BN
fleet (CB&Q-43, GN-17, NP-16, SP&S-3, WP-1(via CB&Q)).

The other 15 were
Six from AT&SF, two from B&O, three ex C&O(from SCL), and four ex WABASH(from N&W).
Additional purchases were 4 Milwaukee "Super Domes" in 1972, 5 SP domes
in 1972 and 1973 (they had been leased at inception), one ex C&O dome from
Autoliner Corp in April 1974 after a lease in 1972-73, 3 domes from
D&RGW after the "RGZ" terminated in July 1983, and finally 3 more
Milwaukee "Super Domes" in 1990 after Princess Tours abandoned the
"California Sun Express".

Amtrak 9202(1971), retired 10/77 - sold to Building Leasing Corp (12/77), sold by estate 3/78 to the "Union Station Venture Group" for planned rebuilding of the St. Louis MO station. This group (based in Salt Lake City) went bankrupt, and the car was sold to Bill Ross Park City UT along with several other ex Amtrak cars and moved there for use in a RR theme restaurant. While the cars were stored there, vandals released the brakes and allowed the cars to roll down a hill and ride up a bumper post (this car unfortunately was the "lead" car). After development plans fell through car was sold to an individual in Pocotello ID for use as a RR theme museum at a truck stop. The deal did not include the car's now bent truck sets, and after being trucked up there from UT the car was placed on stacked RR ties. The car was fine until fate dealt her another blow (literally) as a strong wind storm pushed the car off the ties and on the ground canted at a 45 degree angle. In 1984 the car was sold to Bret Hall/Falcon Car shops Falcon CO for planned restoration for use on the (then operating) Cadillac & Lake City RY which had moved their operations from Cadillac MI to Limon CO.

The car was deemed too expensive to repair and after operations ceased in 1988 the car was "on the road again" this time to RCR Incorporated/Portland OR having been purchased during 1990 by John Kirkwood/SFO "Rail Ventures". There the car was deemed (again) too expensive to repair and was (again) sold 10/98 to Dave Varilek/Empire Builder Private Cars/Vista-Dome Adventures whom in turn resold the car to Illinois Transit Assembly (the same day) becoming ITAX 1852 where it remained at their East St. Louis IL facility (back to St. Louie again!). Car sold 7/2000 to Katherine Schultz of CA - car remaining at ITA for
restoration

9250-retired 9/85, Nav Fosse/Cedar Rail Enterprises(1986), brokered by J Baldwin to Dirk Lenthe Fargo ND (1986)(800077), traded for CBQ 378 "Silver Lookout" from Carl Weiffenbach Columbus OH(1988), Les Kasten(1990), Transcisco (1990). Car moved to San Antonio and gutted as Transcisco started to re-build the car. Repossessed by Kasten during 1991 after Transcisco bankruptcy, moved to Illinois Transit Assembly and stored, sold 1998 - rebuilt as a "stuff & mount" with deep carpets and ADA compliant restrooms and access, shipped 8/99 to Pinal County AZ for use as the Maricopa (Phoenix "remote") Amtrak station - observed on "Eagle" 11/99 in El Paso - on "garden" tracks at LAUPT as of 4/2000.

CB&Q 376

Built by Budd in 1948 "Silver Penthouse", sleeper-obs(CZ), BN 376 (not pained BN), became Amtrak
9251-car retained for Amtrak President W Graham Claytor for conversion to Amtrak Business car 10002(2) - plan fell through as there were too many height restrictions and an Amfleet car became available,

went to BN (5/93), stuffed & mounted as a "training classroom" at BNSF museum Ft Worth TX (1999) as "Prairie View" - BNSF 21

Unfortunately, the Penthouse has been significantly modified (apparently in Topeka) in order to turn it into a conference room. The interior has been completely gutted, the dome floor has been removed (reducing the iconic Vista-Dome to a glorified skylight), and the car's floor is now one level. The windows which used to provide viewing pleasure for the bedroom passengers are now blanked over, and the windows under the dome have been reconfigured to match the others in height. Two doors have been cut into the left side of the car, to facilitate handicapped access.

The car was built from ex-TNO parlor #700(P.S. 1937) and released 3/55 for service on the San Francisco Overland (painted UPRR yellow colors with fluting). The car was "slab sided" by SP during 1970 and was pure silver/red stripe scheme by then. The car was leased by Amtrak as SP 9370 and was purchased and became Amtrak 9370 during 1972. The car was wrecked 3/77 on the "Coast Starlight" at Corning CA and was shipped to
the ATSF Topeka KS shops and stored. The car was retired and sold during 1978 to George Champney/Champney & Co Scrapping. The car was sold (along
with ex-Amt# 3500) to a farmer in Carbondale KS. The truckless cars became a Bait Shop and the dome was used as an office until it was declared unsafe following a bad storm that leaned the car too far over and started to collapse the car in on itself. The owner scrapped the car on his property during 1988-89, retaining the ex-SP lounge car.

This car was built on lunch counter-tavern-lounge #10311(P.S. 1937) with 34 dome seats. Outshopped 4/55 for use in San Francisco Overland service, it was first leased by Amtrak for a year as SP 9371 and sold as Amtrak 9371 during 1972. The car was stored in L.A.'s "Old Mexico" yards until sold 11/82 to D Redmound Bozeman MT. The car was moved to Montana for planned excursion service, but remained stored until sold 11/94 to the Golden Gate Railway Museum through their "Project 2472 Inc.". The car was moved by the BN as far as Portland OR where it was refused for interchange by the SP (figures). The car was moved to Doyle McCormick's facility in the former SP roundhouse along with the Pacific NorthWest Chapter's cars, where it remained until moved by the (now) UPRR during 1997. The car is in storage at the museum's former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard facility awaiting rebuilding.

dome-buffet-lounge car (ex-SP rebuild)

9372 SP 3603 This car was built on lunch counter-tavern-lounge #10310(P.S. 1937) with 34 dome seats. Outshopped 4/55 for use in San Francisco Overland service, it was first leased by Amtrak for a year as SP 9372 and sold as Amtrak 9372 during 1972. The car was retired during 1981 and sold 8/81 to Henry Frazier/Railway Services Co Rushton LA. The car was moved to Louisiana and stored until sold during late 1981 to Tony Belmont St Petersburg FL (former lead singer of rock group "Dion & the Belmonts"). The car was moved to St Pete becoming the "Belmont Station" Ice Cream Parlor. The car was INCORRECTLY lettered as "Southern Pacific # 3601" as well as "The Largest Railcar In The World" on it's gold painted window bands, but the Amtrak blue rectangle containing the Amtrak number 9372 was never removed. The parlor ceased operations after 1988 and the car remained there until the property (and car) were sold during 1989 to Roger Broderick Tampa FL who developed the location into a strip mall.

The car was then "GIVEN" to John Greco Tampa FL and was trucked up to his "Econo Lodge/Steak Depot" on Busch Blvd in Tampa. The car was moved out in the parking lot near a former Amtrak/NP nee Katy coach near the pool. The car remained there and was weathering and vandalized until it was sold 5/98 to Jon Clark Cerritos CA. The car was brokered by Les Kasten to Dr. Arthur Cushman Madison TN (Nashville) and was placed on a TTX flat car and moved up to the former Southeastern Specialties (now

Railsouth/Quantum Rail) facility outside Jacksonville FL. The car is stored there awaiting a decision from Dr. Cushman if it is economically feasible to rebuild the car, and was reported (11/99) to be headed to Illinois Transit Assembly.

to Amtrak 9361. "Ocean View" was a 1969 "experimental" paint scheme car.

It, along with diner "Lake Minnetonka" was repainted by the GN's Dale Street shops (MSP), as FULL width white stripes on both sides without the standard "turn down". The white stripe was straight through the car, effectively making a half green (lower) half white (upper) scheme with black roof and GN Big Sky Blue style lettering and logos. After Amtrak purchase, the car was rebuilt 3/85 with HEP and numbered 9300(2) and used in Amtrak Auto Train service - the name was retained. It was refurbished and renumbered 10031 in 1999 (name removed), and assigned to Corporate Services Unit. As of 2000, it was in active service in the Amtrak "San Diegan" pool.
