the E units numbered above 400 up to 439

Originally the Amtrak E units numbered 400 and higher were E-9s

As retirements thinned the E-8s and the new F-40s needed the 200s 300s and the lower 400 numbers
there where several renumberings to the higher 400s

426  An engine change on the northbound Lone Star is taking place at Cleburne on the Santa Fe. The ATSF shops are to the right with the station off to the left. The two E9 units on the right (#414 - ex-UP) had taken the Lone Star into Houston the night before and had brought it back to Cleburne the next day. Word spread fast in Houston that E units were on the Lone Star (normal power -SDP40F) so I had to make a Houston-Cleburne round trip. #426 (ex-UP)and an SDP40F would take the train all the way to Chicago.
There must have been a problem with the southbound engines the day before and E units were substituted. The InterAmerican which also passed thru Cleburne had E's as normal power and sometimes a couple were at the Santa Fe shops for use as needed.Cleburne is about 30 miles south of Ft.Worth.
