In November 1975 five were rebuilt with Head End Power to handle the new Amfleet equipment since the new locos with HEP had not been delivered

Amtrak owned five HEP-equipped E-units for inter-city services, which were overhauled by Penn Central at their Juniata Shops in 1974-75.
These mainly operated in the Northeast/New England area, but could occasionally be seen in other areas.
It was not uncommon to see them hauling the brand new Amfleet cars by, either solo or teamed up with an F40PH.
497 would later be sold or leased to Metro North, while 498 and 499 would become part of the Conrail OCS fleet.

Amtrak E8A and MBTA GP9 At South Station

Amtrak E8A 497 is leading a train of amfleet cars out of South Station in 1978. MBTA GP9 7539 is to the right. Semaphores are still in use on signal bridge 7.

Electric "E" Passes Genoa

Went to Penn Central in 1968 and renumbered PC 4309. Amtrak acquired the unit in 1974 and renumbered it AMTK 498. In 1976, Amtrak removed the steam generators and installed head-end power sets.
