It was retirement after hitting a truck loaded with 1300 turkeys in northwestern Minnesota on Amtrak's Empire Builder in October 1973.

The unit was retired, moved to Dale St., St. Paul for storage and later traded to EMD for new Amtrak power. It was still in storage in St. Paul in early 1975.
