The 900 Series GG-1

After the page loads, click on the image or engine number to view a larger image

Built by the PRR starting in 1935, operated by Penn Central, Conrail, NJT and Amtrak

When Amtrak first started renumbering the GG-1s all they did was remove the "4" Only three units were renumbered like this 4902, 4908,
4931 ( 902, 908, 931 respectively). This idea was quickly dropped and all 30 were numbered into the 900-929 series.

In the spring of 1976, as part of the sale of the Northeast Corridor, Amtrak got another 11 GG-1s. These were never
renumbered into the 900 series.

It would appear that the 900 series GG-1s were renumbered back into the 4900 series before the 900 series
AEM-7s arrived in 1979.

All were retired by 1983

One of the colorful G's painted in Amtrak's red, blue and silver paint. A
play on the handful of silver G's the PRR had. Eventually all Amtrak motive
power would have silver bodies but only a few of the G's were saved from PC
black.

Photo is taken during the afternoon rush hour at the old North Rahway
station. Merck Pharmaceutical is in the background (you can see the
smokestack with Merck on it behind the G). The railroad built the station
at the request of Merck. It was eventually shut down in the 80's and you
can no longer get at the platforms as the stair cases have been removed.

Still pulling the old standard heavyweight cars.
