THE HARBOR SERIES

Amtrak slumbercoaches 2050 DUNKIRK HARBOR, 2052 MONROE HARBOR, 2054 TOLEDO HARBOR, and 2056 VERMILION HARBOR were all built by Budd in 1949 as 22 roomette sleepers for general assignment to New York Central trains. They were NOT built for the Twentieth Century Limited as this train was not assigned (fluted stainless steel) 22 roomette sleepers built by Budd, although the consist did include (painted Corten steel) 22 roomette sleepers built by Pullman Standard.

In 1961, NYC had Budd rebuild 10 of their 22 roomette sleepers into "sleepercoaches" (a NYC term) with 16 single rooms and 10 double rooms.

While serving NYC, these 4 cars and their 6 sisters were a pool assigned to: The Twentieth Century Limited, The New England States, The Ohio State Limited, The Cleveland Limited, The Wolverine

Isle

Built by Budd 1952 for CB&Q as #432 - a 10-6 sleeper for use on the Blackhawk and American Royal Zephyr.-Became BN 432 when BN formed (1970?)-became Amtrak property in April 1971 and was renumbered 2659 in Jan 1975-became 2464 when converted to headend power. Today it isowned by Massachusetts Volunteer Firefighters Association and is being converted to a training car

The start of the new life for the Silver Isle. It was quite a job to get the Amtrak stripping off. Also, Amtrak painted the vestibule doors and
moldings with many, many coats of paint. It took 5 coats of paint remoiver, but it's off. Window area will be painted in the spring.

During removal of all the Amtrak lettering from the sign board and found the outline of the original lettering. The Silver Isle is lettered as it was for the CB&Q.

Former Amtrak Sleeper, the Silver Isle, was used at a training location in Huntington, MA.
( CSX Boston Line ). For over
an hour, emergency responders performed search and rescue drills. This was the first trip for the Silver Isle in its Safety Train program. Also, it was the first stop for Safety Train II. There are 6 stops in three states planned for the fall program. Safety Train I has just departed the Georgia Fire Academy.

ex-Pine Grove 2990
The car was renamed on Oct. 13, 1978, at the Amtrak station in St. Albans, Vermont.

Joseph V. MacDonald served on the Amtrak Board of Directors as an appointee of Senator Aiken of Vermont. As an astute statistician his attention was soon attracted to inequities in the operating costs allocated to the "Montrealer" south of Springfield as compared to the segment to the north.

The appointment to the Amttrak board reads:

"By virtue of the authority vested in me as President of the United States under the provisions of the Rail Passenger Service Act of 1970, as amended, I have nominated, and, by and with the advice
and consent of the senate, do appoint Joseph V. MacDonald, of New York a member of the Board of Directors of the National Railroad Passenger Corporation
for a term of two years subject to the conditions prescribed by law.
