N5E
A single car subclass, the N5E is believed by many to be the fore runner of the N8.

It was rebuilt from a wrecked N5 in 1945, to become PRR N5E 477594. It had a slightly offset (13") streamlined cupola similar to the N8 and four sets of paired side windows.

Reclassed as a N5B late in it's service to Penn Central, . The cabin was renumbering by PC from 22853 to 22983 . It was probably reclassed as a N5B at this time as well. Under Conrail it was renumbered again to 20076.

This one of a kind caboose is preserved outside a Utica, NY Children Museum, next to the Amtrak Station.

N5F
Built in 1918. The N5F was a PRR eight-car class of improved N5 cabin that lacked the improved collision protection found on the N5A. On its right side it has a large tool box/battery box suspended from the sill like that found on the N8..

Only 3 N5Fs made it to become Conrail cabooses
