Penn Central Caboose Photo Archive - The N9 & N9E Transfer Cabooses

N9 There were 160 of them, numbered 18195-18354. Construction overlapped the NYC/PRR merger. The NYC Lot number
was 103 and lacked roofwalks, ladders and had a propane installation of heat. A personal side note - my father sold the propane installation to NYC/Penn Central. Later they were changed to heating oil.
The exchange of 100lb propane tanks must have been very difficult compared to a hose for heating oil.

 Details of the propane installation
NOTE THE WOOD DECK! I think they were built with wood deck then when they lost they propane installation went to the metal roofwalk type of grate.

Can anyone confirm this?

a mainline train on the ex-Erie from Binghamton NY to Croxton NJ. The train was eastbound and had just come off Starucca Viaduct. They must have been short of cabooses that day to use a transfer caboose on this train
