New in Oct 2006 - Purchased with a state grant from the California South Coast Air Quality Management District, Amtrak is retrofitting a switch engine with RailPower Company's hybrid "Green Goat" technology. The hybrid locomotive will be used in the Los Angeles Yard and will reduce fuel consumption by 75 percent and emissions by 80 percent.

Amtrak 599 (Railpower GG20B "Green Goat") was reportedly headed for Los Angeles from Railpower in Calgary

according to Jody's RailpowerGreen Goats - Hybrib Locomotive Rosters

Amtrak 599 was built March 30, 2006 with a "Phase 3" body w/larger vents. Originally converted from CP 1600 (GMD GP9u). it became CP GG20B 1700:1. Retired and resold as AMTK 599.

Sighted in Alyth yard in Calgary, AB. Oct., 2006. Reported headed to Amtrak 8th St. (Los Angeles) Yard.

In December 2006 599, was reported on lease from Railpower Hybrid Technologies, financed by a State Grant from the California South Coast Air Quality Management District, was at Los Angeles Redondo for intended use as a switcher, It never reported as being used. Later sent to City Of Industry CA in January 2008. The lease on this unit ceased and in June 2008 it was renumbered to RPRX2406 and leased to UP at West Colton CA
