#999000-999314 Between 1966 and 1968, Santa Fe's West Wichita shops upgraded 315 all-steel cabooses for mainline pool service. Previously, cabooses had been assigned to individual crews, and were changed at every crew change point. Labor agreements reached in the 1960's allowed cabooses to run-through, but also required certain upgrades. The Ce-1's were equipped with cushion underframes and sealed windows in place of the old, sliding kind originally found on the cars. Taking the cupola end as the rear, the three windows on the right side of the car were initially retained, while the five windows on the left were reduced to four. Within a few years, the arrangement was changed to just two on the right and one on the left. ( text from http://atsf.railfan.net/waycars ) |

999315-999537 The second group of cabooses rebuilt for pool service emerged from Santa Fe's San Bernardino, CA shops in 1969 and 1970. The 223 members of the Ce-2 class differed only slightly from the Ce-1's, and most of the differences were internal. These cars also emerged with black roofs, some later had been repainted with a red roof. ( text from http://atsf.railfan.net/waycars ) |

999637-999639 Rebuilt in 1969 from Ce-3 class cars of the same numbers, the Ce-4 class cars emerged without cupolas. They were used in southern New Mexico on the copper ore shuttles from the Chino open-pit copper mine at Santa Rita to the smelter at Hurley. Clearances at Hurley were such that a caboose with a cupola wouldn't fit through the unloader. When the Santa Fe's shuttle trains were replaced by a slurry pipeline in 1982, the Ce-4's were out of a job. They were briefly reassigned to local work elsewhere, but all were off the roster by the mid-1980's.

They were intended for transfer service in Kansas City and elsewhere. The work was done at Topeka and Kansas City in the early 70's. The cars retained their original 4-digit numbers initially, but in 1976, they and the surviving unrebuilt standard cabooses were renumbered into the 999900-999979 series. The unrebuilt cars had been designated as "Ce" class cars in 1973. A few cars received the standard Santa Fe Indian red caboose scheme with large yellow emblem, but others received the bright red scheme modeled by Ce class 999961 above. This scheme usually included a badly oversprayed white Santa Fe emblem. ( text from http://atsf.railfan.net/waycars ) |

999640-999651 The dozen Ce-7 class cars were modified but not significantly upgraded standard all-steel cabooses. The modifications were performed at San Bernardino to provide refurbished cars for local and transfer service on the west coast. The Ce-7's retained their old 4-digit numbers until 1975, when they were renumbered into the 999640-series. Some cars received the standard Santa Fe caboose scheme with yellow cupolas to indicate local service, but some served out their lives in the old mineral brown scheme ( text from http://atsf.railfan.net/waycars ) |
|
999700-999749 The Ce-8 class was built by the International Car Company in 1978. The cars were essentially the same as the Ce-6 class, but were received in the standard caboose scheme rather than the variation modeled by the 6's. The Ce-8's also had full "skirts" around the lower edge of the body, compared to the partial skirting on the Ce-6's. |

999543-999582 In 1978, the Topeka shops upgraded 39 Ce and Ce-5 class cars and one Ce-3 car to road service cars of the Ce-9 class. As with the Ce-1's and 2's, the cars received sealed windows, cushion underframes, and various other modifications. They were used system-wide, and a few managed to hang on into the early 1990's ( text from http://atsf.railfan.net/waycars ) |

999583-999592 The ten Ce-10's were upgraded from Ce and Ce-5 class cars at the Topeka shops simultaneous with the Ce-9 class. The Ce-9's and Ce-10's reportedly only differed in the type of cushion underframe applied ( text from http://atsf.railfan.net/waycars ) |

999750-999824 The 75 members of the Ce-11 class were built by the International Car Company in 1981. They were the last new cabooses purchased by the Santa Fe. Essentially the same as the Ce-8's, the cars roamed the system in various types of service. Only three years after the Ce-11's were constructed, the Santa Fe reached agreements with its labor unions allowing the virtual elimination of cabooses from its trains. |
