Amtrak got it's cabooses as a part of the 1973 Northeast Corridor purchase.
Their intended use was in work train service over the 228 miles.
As near as I can tell, Penn Central sold the oldest N5 cabooses it had.

Amtrak 14026 and 14027 are former B&LE cabooses - The Bessemer had 20 class NE1 cabooses that were acquired from Greenville Steel Car Company in 1941. These cars were the first all steel cabooses and the first bay window design cars the Bessemer ever acquired.
